Everyone has seen the classic Tim Burton film, The Nightmare Before Christmas (during Halloween and Christmas, of course!) and thought it would make a great costume at parties. While you can always buy the solo Jack Skellington or Sally, dressing up with friends is always more fun.

Ask any Doctor Who fan and sure enough, they’ll tell you there’s nothing scarier than a Weeping Angel. For anyone who doesn’t know, the creature is an alien that takes on the form of these statues commonly seen in cemetaries. They can’t move when you look at them, however, don’t blink, or they’ll trasnport you in time to the past before your birth and feed off your energy while you’re alive.

4. The Grady Daughters

Stephen King fans will differe upon a lot of things: what tale was the best, if Under the Dome is worth reading – you get the idea. One thing they all agree on is how creepy the Grady Daughters are. Fun fact: in the film they’re known to be twins, however, in the novel, they’re actually not. Either way, these two characters from The Shining will definertly spook out people.

5. Mario and Luigi

This classic brother tag-team duo has been a Halloween favourite for decades – not only as their origional selves, but also with many twists. The costumes are available for every age, gender, and sub-cultre.

6. Wizard of Oz Characters

Solo or on their own, the many characters of the classic The Wizard of Oz have been made into Halloween costumes. It’s also one of those costumes you won’t have to explain to people all night long.

Another cult classic, this film is filled with iconic characters. Even if you decided to dress up alone, the characters from this film have had such an impact on people that you’ll be instantly recognized.

Yes, Stephen King may be onto something when several characters end up on this list. Whether you go as the old or new Pennywise, you’ll be sure to be a ghastly sight. This is one of the best Halloween costumes because, well, it’s Halloween – why not enjoy the spooky time of year?

10. Superheros

Superheros are always a safe bet. Whether it’s DC. Marvel, or The Incredibles, there’s no shortage of this popular choice. Better yet, why not add a twist? How about a steam punk Iron Man, or a Medvieval Spiderman? Deadpool is constantly depicted wearing other costumes on top of his – or even without his mask.

11. Elle and her Eggos

Stranger Things is by far one of the best shows to come out of Netflix. From the horror movie-Sci-Fi mashup genre to the accurate depiction of the 80s, combine with the fantastic story telling and character development the showis downright phenomenal. Dressing up as Elle is fun on its own, by why not find a friend and dress them up as her true love: Eggos?

By this point you’ve seen all kinds of videos or gifs online of the hilarious illusions. Ostrich riders, nurses carrying men, and cowboys are among the more popular.

16. Classic Halloween Ghouls

What’s wrong with a classic witch or vampire? Maybe a mummy or Frankenstien’s Monster? Nothing says Halloween like dressing up as a classic spook!

17. Any Disney Princess

A classic for anyone of any age, Disney Princess costumes are easy to come by. They’re a safe, family-friendly choice, and there’s really no downside to them.

This is one of the more original ideas in a while. It doesn’t take too much effort to pull off, and you’re bound to get compliments on it. Besides, people have dressed up as Santa, so why not another winter/Christmas trope?

This classic goth family has been spotted since they made their first appearence in the old tv show. Doesn’t matter if it’s a group of friends, an actual family, or a bunch of your pets, this costume is always a gag.

29. History Inspired

If you can’t think of something, look to the past. Flappers, Victorian women, and Ancient Romans are common and classic. These are some of the best Halloween costumes because everyone knows who you are, and they can be rather easy or fun to make. Want to stand out? Sure, you can dress up as the main character from the classic horror novel.
