What is Vermeil?

Vermeil is a popular type of gold plating. In order for a piece of jewellery to be considered vermeil, it must meet certain requirements. The piece must have sterling silver as the base metal, the gold must be at least 10k in quality, and the thickness of the gold must be at least 1 micrometre. (based on the requirements of the Government of Canada).

What's the Difference Between Plated and Vermeil?

Vermeil and plated have different specifications. While both have to use at least 10k gold and have a thickness of at least 1 micrometre, gold plated items can have any kind of metal as a base. However, as House of Jewellery only deals with precious metals, all our gold plated products are truly gold vermeil. We ask most of our manufactures to put a minimum of 2.5 microns of 14k gold on all our jewellery for additional durability.

Is Vermeil Water Proof?

Gold vermeil is not waterproof, and as a result, we strongly recommend you remind your clients to not wear their jewellery while swimming, exercising, or while doing other water-based activities.

Is Vermeil Worth Buying?

Vermeil is a great option for your clients who want the look of gold but don't want the gold prices.
